Arsène Wenger

Pep is definitely greater than Wenger. But Wenger will go down as a legend. His failure in Europe will certainly be counted against him though and rightly so.

Pep and Wenger can’t really compared, in the sense that both had very different roles play at they respective clubs; after our stadium move Wenger role was to keep the club afloat and competing while not really having access to significant funds, while pep on the other didn’t have those limitations at any club.

Had Wenger gone to Madrid would he have to worry about astute signings and debt? No, not at all probably would have a lot more titles and made Madrid a better outfit then currently. Pep has gone to great clubs who have been winning titles year in year out, who has the finance in place for him just to focus on the field and that’s it.

If Pep had gone to let’s say spurs or Liverpool and had them at top of the table competing, and moving to the next level then I would be like yeah this guy is the best in the world.

Of course they can be compared. Whatever the intricacies of their roles they have both managed at a high level for a decent timeframe. Two things dont have to be exactly similar to be compared.

If Wenger had gone to Madrid is such an over used line. We simply have no way of knowing how he would have operated at a club where signings would have been enforced on him. It might have been a disaster or a complete success. But we dont know so in the meantime we have to work with what we’ve got and compare the two for what they have done.

Last season also put a major dent in Wenger’s legacy tbh.

No manager of a big club has worked with restrictions that Wenger has, so it is indeed incomparable.

By and large many manager comparisons are futile . Im sure Wenger would be a hit at some big european clubs like Barca or Bayern just as he would not be able to cope with managing a lower club that didnt have the skill sets to play as he would want them to,that goes for Pep,Maureen too .
One things for sure he doesnt possess the tactical nous to win the Champions League today.

What is the obsession with saying a comparison cannot be made between two individuals? Of course it bloody can.

As long as we are objective and fair then virtually anything within reason is open to discussion and comparison.

It’s true that they have different roles at their respective clubs but I think they are similar managers because they both play a similar style of football, especially when you compare the first few seasons when Wenger came here to Guardiola’s at Barcelona.

They both played a fast counter attacking game, with players that had pace, skill and power, as well as a pressing game, which and which Barcelona did so effectively and what Man City are starting to show.
It’s only since we moved to the Emirates that Wenger changed his style of play bu recently, he seems to be getting our team to start playing the way we used to when we were so successful.

But both Wenger and Guardiola are very different, in every aspect, to Mourinho.
From their style of play and the way they build teams, to their personality, Mourinho, is almost the opposite of everything those two are.

Wenger might have been a success at Real Madrid, but he also knew he would never have been given the amount of time we have given him to build teams from the youth level.
For instance, there is no way Real Madrid would have tolerated so many trophy less seasons as we have had.
I know we had the stadium to pay for but that was Wenger’s choice and some of his transfer dealings have been questionable, to say the least.

You’re right, but also no other top manager has been under less pressure to win trophies as Wenger has.
So, although Guardiola has had money at the biggest clubs in Europe, he has also had to deal with far more pressure from the owners, supporters and media, than Wenger has here.

I think the main reason Wenger has stayed here so long is simply for that reason.
He controls almost every aspect of the club, and he would not have been afforded that luxury at any other top European club.

You can compare all u like but each person has an opinion ! So most people are not objective or fair when giving theirs !

What you said is true but there is one over sight; trophy less season here because of constraints which at Madrid those constraints wouldn’t exist.

Playing on the left wing :smirk:

He did play left wing during one of the Euros, didn’t he?
I also remember him picking up one sulking Torres in the finals.

Arsene Wenger. Great man.

That’s true but that was my point.
The reason he stayed here was because although he had financial restraints because of the new stadium, which he wanted, he also knew that the would never have had the power he has had here, elsewhere.
He also had far less pressure on him to win trophies here than he would have at Real Madrid.

Like a lot of big clubs, they go through managers as often as some people change their underwear, and a lot of the transfer business is done by the owner, not the manager, so for Wenger, that is not an attractive option.

No manager at a top club has ever had the control over a club that Wenger has had here, which is why he chose to stay with us rather than go elsewhere.

I would agree with that assertion. Him and fugerson are the last managers that will ever have that degree of control at a club

No need to rehash, you know my thoughts on those “restrictions”, but I disagree. Of course you can compare. You can also point out the differences but they dont stop comparisons.

Yes your thoughts are bullshit ones.
How can you deny those restrictions?

@Trion it doesn’t fit the narrative.

Like I said, no need to rehash.
