We’re the PL big spenders now, even spent more than Bayern Munich which is our eternal yardstick now. We’re where we always wanted to be, and it’s mighty satisfying to be the envy of all other fans
Is this gonna be our year to look back and say wow we really spent 200m on that? I guess it was over the course of a few summers but this feels a lot like when lolpool bought Andy Carroll, Aquillani, and all that dross and you could tell it was such a desperate attempt to stay relevant but no real players wanted to go there.
Well some priorities have been. Creative mid and back up GK are undoubtedly sorted. The other areas all have varied levels of question marks.
They probably go like this:
CB: Replaced Luiz with White. Not enough. Needed 1 more top CB.
CM/CDM: Gambled all on Lokonga. Poor. Needed 1 more top CM.
RB: All depends on the quality of Tomiyasu.
Back Up LB: Tavares has a lot to prove but can’t complain yet.
Lacazette replacement: Failed here but nowhere near top priority.
Wide player: Never really got near this happening and lowest priority.
The creative midfield work was the windows biggest victory. Odegaard is a gem. Just because he was here on loan for 6 months doesn’t mean he isn’t a genuine signing. Extending Smith-Rowe also means we have two quality young players in that position.
As for CM and CB however, we are very short when you consider the fitness concerns with Partey and Gabriel. Relying on Lokonga and Xhaka is a big worry and creates ridiculous pressure whilst Bissouma was there for the taking. Not even close to being secure with our CB partnerships either. Think we will regret not properly addressing these.
RB sorted, will see on how good the signing is. No second CM signing which I keep pointing out will mean Elneny will play far more games than any of us want him to. No freshening up of CF it seems, which was not a priority for me this summer, but the state of Auba and his relationship with Mikel remains a mystery, and a bit of a concern.
Positives wise, Edu/Arteta did take a gamble passing up Buendia to wait and see what would happen with Odegaard. That worked out, although I am not sure if we will get high performance from Odegaard this season, maybe only once he’s had a good injury free run of games in the PL. Lokonga does look like a good solid signing.
Still, with TDD still to close, this transfer window cannot be rated more than 4/10 for me. The offloading of players has been very poor, and in some cases the club really needs to look at how Arteta arguably has cost the club quite a few tens of millions pounds due to the way he has impacted asset values, mainly due to his man management traits.
Yes. My son told me so. Kid has got to be one of the top FM players ever with as much as he plays. In fairness, he said that the way the game engine is setup, wide players do really well, but the new guy can play inside as well.
The younger one will rick roll you in FIFA as well.
