Arsenal transfers 25/26

He’s not particularly good at any one thing and I just see him as a water carrier tbh. All he does is play 1-2s, side passes and carries the ball up the field

No I agree that they are in a weird state at the moment but doesn’t change the fact that Guendou is attracting elite suitors, we should be looking to monetise that interest not just cast him away as quickly and cheaply as possible.

I’m trying to understand how this is handled in accounting terms that makes this magically balance the books lol. We could buy Coutinho for a billion +9 and sell Guen for a billion and the net difference is still 9…

I am sure this has to do with amortization of contract and transfers and they want the Coutinho off books, but they are just replacing it with an even more ridiculous Guen amortization.

It is all about amortization and the difference between purchases and sales.

When you buy a player, the transfer fee is amortized over the life of the contract so if we buy Coutinho for 100M and sign him to a five year deal then on the books we have 20M going out each of the next five years. But sales are credited entirely in the current year so if we sell Guendouzi for 100M then we have that much in revenue for the current year. Magically, we could then spend 80M on other players and still have “balanced the books” from a FFP perspective for this year (holding all else equal). Of course we’re setting ourselves up for trouble in the future but maybe the gamble is that we will have rising revenues in the future to offset that.

Yeah I know the transfer amortization… but if you extend that logic, then we are stuck with an insane amortization on Coutinho… it gives us a fake windfall the first year but then subsequent years we are f*d. Also, it doesn’t affect the basic actual cashflow, which is still -9, so while we theoretically can spend more for FFP year 1 (and less every other year), we are still going to be bound by cashflow probably.

Anyway, I doubt we do something this bizarre honestly… and the larger issue to me is Coutinho’s wages… if we take him on loan and they pay part of wages, fine… but if we buy him, we are going to have to match his wages and that seems like another Ozil albatross waiting to happen.

UEFA has also relaxed FFP rules for this year, although how this will work is still a bit fuzzy to me.

I would take Coutinho on loan if the fee was reasonable or in a swap deal if he was willing to accept a wage decrease, but I agree that giving him 300K per week for the next five years is a terrible idea.

Coutinho is not enough good for the top 10 in Europe but he is not a bum either if you’re honest. For a club that aspires top four, for now, he is more than good enough. Ziyech is the same level…
