At this stage I strongly suspect Barcelona are up to some serious fraud. On the precipice of folding for 3 years yet still finding ways of funding huge transfers/salaries.
Happy to be schooled if I’m wrong of course, I watch Spanish league football but don’t understand the business/regulatory side.

Another article linking us to Merino, this one suggesting that we could do a deal around 20m.
Reports on his current wages suggest that he is on under 100k per year so I imagine that would be fairly reasonable as well.
I’d hope that we also brought in another midfielder that moved the needle more but Merino for 20m and 100k per week would be a pretty good addition to our squad depth.

- Want to respect Emile’s wish for regular time
- Nelson, Nketiah, Ramsdale and Tierney could all go
- Plan is to move on those that are considered surplus to requirements and then replace them with higher calibre players
- Calafiori is an exception, we want to get him and then worry about potentially selling someone in defence
- Merino interest confirmed
- Williams main target if we decide to go for a wide target but it’s a tough deal

Club want to respect Smith Rowe’s wish for playing time - they just want him out the door and have done for some time.
Arsenal want to guarantee they’ve shifted players before buying - yeah, us and every other club in Europe.
Calafiori - every outlet in Europe has documented Arsenal are willing to do that deal now for at least a week.
Merino - the Athletic “confirm” they’ve read the same stuff as everyone else.
Williams - (insert club name) would like to sign Williams but it’s a tough deal to do. Copy and paste into transfer news for every top side in Europe.

It’s funny that a journalist would consider this newsworthy when no club would deliberately do anything else.
I think the point was mainly that we would sell before buying and Calafiori is an exception.

Keep (of those rumoured to be leaving): Ramsdale (just think he may surprise us and decide to stay for one more season, he may not play much but our coaching set-up is excellent and he’s still young), Partey, Vieira (there’s a talent in there somewhere), Zinchenko, Jesus.
Sell or loan: Tavares, Lokonga, Smith-Rowe, Kiwior (if a good offer comes along), Nelson, Nketiah.

I’ve always said it but the CM market is such that you can get varying types of quality that can suit a team.
While Rice is a transformative signing and likely a few weeks won’t get near to again for a player (unless of an exceptional circumstance), we have guys like Fofana and Merino which represent good profiles for the CM positions of interest to us at very suitable market rates. I hope we’re interested in these kind of deals.
Now the big international competitions are over with there will obviously be more movement, so I expect a lot of Hagn nonsense.
The Calafiori signing might also change how we approach the ‘Xhaka role’ in our team after listening about what he could potentially bring to our team.
