He doesn’t need to be the star player, that’s half the problem. It’s why the USA is so easy to defend against. He’ll more often than not play iso-ball because he’s been told he needs to be the American Soccer Messiah.
He just needs to go somewhere to play every week, regardless of the level at this point. If it’s in the Championship, who cares? Holland? Who cares? Basically anywhere but the MLS which wouldn’t really help him develop his game.
I tend to think of him as a luxury player but maybe he could fit into a system like Leeds. He didn’t really grow up in the USA/CONCACAF system but he likes a foul and a whine for sure. Leeds are all about that.
No more Chelsea rejects. We want young talented players to complement our squad and continue our move forward. Mudryk or Gakpo are far better options IMO.
I guess. It’s not his fault Chelsea overpaid for him and that he was ostensibly bought to replace Hazard.
There are some mitigating factors too. Lampard is not a good coach and I think it would have been difficult for him to jump ahead of a guy like Mason Mount in the depth chart who is English and an academy product.
And then there’s the issue of Chelsea just being Chelsea. They bought a bunch of other guys like Ziyech, Havertz, Werner, Sterling, etc. and he just kept sliding further down the depth chart. He was also hurt a decent amount too.
That being said it’s not like he’s been amazing for them. Probably the best I’ve ever seen him play for Chelsea was the 2020 FA cup final until he got hurt.
I’m not entirely sure what he is at this point in his career. He’s come off the bench for the USA and done alright but I don’t think of him a really suited to that role. He probably can’t start at a top eight club in England so he can drop down or go elsewhere. Maybe a move back to Germany?
The report also includes that PSG, who employ several of the best attackers in the world, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, will consider paying up to € 60million (£51.8m) for Martinelli, who joined the club for £6million in 2019.
