Arsenal Defence - Discussion

Everyone’s saying this but all in all it was just the one error really. People were ranting before the game that our right side would get demolished and if anything we were way more vulnerable on the left.

Basically what I’m asking is, does one ill-timed shove in the bank make his whole performance shit?

Yes he’s a cunt

It does when he’s repeatedly done things like this. It isn’t one ill-timed challenge; we’ve seen this numerous times over the course of three seasons.

I agree that he had a decent game in all, but he once again gave away a silly penalty and he’s cost us too many points doing shit like this now.

He was a disgustingly poor outlet going forward also Mustafi, but I suppose it’s harsh to judge him on that as he isn’t a RB isn’t it ?

Well of course he was.

Yeah that was the one alteration I would have liked from Emery’s starting 11, would have liked AMN at RB.

He isn’t a RB but he is meant to be a ball playing defender, ie it’s supposed to be one of his strengths

You know is it just my poor judgement or was Mustafi actually good in his first 3 months here?

I’d even go as far as saying his first 6 months even

I was saying that to someone last night, he was good for the first 20 games or so after we signed him, then I think he did a hamstring ? Been poor ever since then which was about December 2016.

Having seen David Luiz shit the bed on Saturday I have been wondering the following:

Are we just totally inept at identifying decent Defenders OR is our defensive organisation / structure /coaching so awful that it doesn’t matter who we sign, our defence will still be shit?

Do we sign shit defenders, or do we sign decent ones and then turn them into bad players? Mustafi, Gabriel, Cygan, Stepanovs, Luzhny, Senderos, Djourou…the list goes on and on!

I have a feeling we could go out and sign Van Dijk and De Ligt to play in defense and we would STILL find a way to turn them into complete jokes!

What do you all reckon?

There is another thread to this, believe it or not, lol

‘Defensive Shambles- personnel or system’

@CliftonGeraldi created it

I think we were quite unlucky with Senderos. I thought he looked like a top talent but he had serious mental frailties and also physical issues that plagued his career.

But to answer the question, it’s always been the nightmare blend of personnel and system that unfortunately hinders us.

Our system often doesn’t protect it’s CBs and then we end up with jokers like Mustafi, Dojo and Gabriel who unfortunately weren’t good enough to handle the system.

Ah shit. Sorry!! Feel free to delete this one. My bad.

Nah, it’s ok. One of the mods will marry them up, I’m sure.

Always good to re-ignite these topics.

(For the record, I’m with you. We could get VVD and Chiellini in and we’d still leak goals)

Yep. As soon as @Mysty sees it. I’m currently busy avoiding doing it. :sunglasses:

I had to figure out how to do it. Apparently I haven’t merged a topic in 4 years :joy:

Turns out Shill was the real OP. I’ve gone full Mysty and merged that too. I can’t be stopped now. By the end of the day the whole forum will be one merged topic.

Can’t believe we’ve been having this conversation for the last 12 years and our defence is still a shit show.

You haven’t really had one world class centre back in that time though. Mertesacker is a World Cup winner sure, and definitely a great captain, but he’s never been world class. Koscielny is closest, and sometimes he was up there for sure, but he’s made some real blunders too from what I recall.

However, arguing with myself here I guess, teams with average centre backs have great defensive records simply because of their tactics, but I’d venture almost all of those sacrifice a lot of that attacking and fluid attractive great football arsenal have tried (and yeah often massively failed) to achieve and strive for.

Your best performance in that regard is still city away where cazorla danced through their midfield. Many have said before they thought that moment was a turning point, Wenger had finally learned how to beat the top teams again, but it was short-lived.

A lot of the problems we have in our defence is a lack of leadership.
We used to have the best defence in the league, under Graham, then it was still good when Wenger came here because a lot of the same defenders were still playing.

As soon as the great defenders like Adams, Keown, Bould, Campbel etc,l started to leave, we gradually neglected those positions and any sort of defensive organisation.

We have bought some established and experienced CB’s in recent seasons but even they look lost in the defensive chaos that had been allowed to build up.

What we need are leaders and proper coaching.
Why this situation has gone on so long is the main reason we throw away so many games.
