Aaron Ramsdale

across the globe

It was less frequent, but I think it’s natural that it was (Which I think is important). With the recent Euros, I think a lot of coaches/teams follow trends than any actual conviction of what they believe in. So I don’t feel inclined to give modern football any credit. Of course you need more ā€˜ball playing defenders’ when everyone is trying it lol.

I recall Emery trying to implement passing out from the back here and it looked it ridiculous, as if he did it because others were doing it.

Same when Conte won the Premier League, three at the back wasn’t some new thing, but within an instant the next season we saw a lot of copy-cats. Even Wenger got in on it.

Which is the whole point of calling Ramsdale ā€œnot a 90s keeperā€.

Ramsdale is a keeper who is no slouch when it comes to playing out of the back but @Flexo has this weird agenda to discredit that ability of his.

The back pass rule was introduced some time in the early 90s and that changed goalkeeping forever. Suddenly, goalkeepers needed to learn to distribute the ball so the generation that came up after the introduction of the rule were much better with the ball at their feet.

Also guys like Sacchi and Cruyff changed the way football was played. The growth of zonal marking, high defensive lines, more intelligent pressing also gave rise to the need for goalkeepers to be adept with the ball at their feet.

The 90s had some legendary goalkeepers who scored goals and were known for their technique. It also had goalkeepers like Walter Zenga who were ā€œsweeper keepersā€ without the passing skills who eventually had to learn how to distribute the ball because of the rule changes.

The issue we have in football like now and it’s something @RockyMaivia touched on is that coaches are following trends more than ever before. There is less individuality in coaching and more ā€œeverybody wants to be Pep-liteā€.

But a traditional top 90s keeper was pretty much everything a keeper is now. The only difference is there is more emphasis on technical aspects (passing mainly) and less emphasis on shot stopping. So goalkeeping has probably gone too far the wrong way now.

Remember that Courtois is probably the best goalkeeper in the world and he is absolutely far from an exceptional distributor. He is pretty much what the likes of Buffon, Schmeicel and Kahn were in the 90s…. Exceptional shot stoppers with good distribution.

Our injury curse has followed him - set to miss a month of football with a broken finger

I will just triple the curse on the one who cursed Arsenal.

Oh no

He is better than Raya though :trossard: :henry2:

Yeah, that tweet is absolute garbage.
Why don’t they show the place where the shot was taken?
It was obviously crowded, he didn’t see the ball.

There’s no way a Premier League level keeper reacts that way withouth a good reason.

Oh gosh! I really liked Ramsdale, but the upgrade that Raya is becomes clearer by the month.

People really can’t just be balanced in their views, can they?

I was a supporter of the Raya move from the start but Ramsdale also isn’t some shitter. Folks have to go between a guy is fucking awful and a guy is untouchable.

That shot from Eze was a rocket. If you’re gonna criticise Aaron for a goal it should have been the first one, but even that one you could argue is a foul.

This is why footballers should never crave for love from football fans.
Sport fans are that crazy bitch you never put your dick into.

Ramsdale left but the moment he is out, the same fans who praised him would wish him relegation to 4th division.

Nah, there’s always been this weird cult that didn’t like him even when he was here and that same cult is the one that want him to do bad elsewhere.

Personally, I think there’s certainly some criticism for Ramsdale but the guy was overall pretty good for us. Raya was a better fit, that’s it.

He’s too good for Southampton.
Arteta seems obsessed with this position and spent more on Ramsdale than Wenger did on all the GK’s he bought.

It’s strange that Arteta has continually changed top quality GK’s like Leno, Martinez and Ramsdale before settling for Raya, while leaving the striker position almost ignored.

He actually changed keepers twice in the 5 years he’s been here.
We went from Leno to Ramsdale to Raya.
Martinez was Leno’s cover and he demanded the #1 spot to extend his deal and stay, so in that case our hand was forced.

And if we were to trace it back, Raya was the guy they wanted from all the way back to Arteta’s first year here but Brentford weren’t selling.

This is stupid idea as it is literally impossible for it to have happened but if Arteta knew in 2021 that he could sign Raya in 2 years do you think he would have just kept Leno in. As truthfully there isn’t much between Leno and Ramsdale I think

Maybe.

The real crime there was letting Leno join Fulham for that despicably shit fee
