UEFA Champions League

It’s not a surprise. PSG, Monaco and whoever else with an influx of oil money are buying up players who would have featured for United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and to a lesser extent Arsenal. Oh and actually PL teams buying pretty decent players as well.

Yeah the Premier League isn’t spending enough money to be competitive in Europe :joy:

lool, I thought that post was pure sarcasm until I realised who the poster was.

Man, missed this one too
really didn’t think there was any chance City would blow it.

Another Coli smiley

Great fight and great defending by Monaco.
Once again, dominating the possession means NOTHING.

AS Monaco, Leicester, Atletico Madrid are the examples of why and how the football is changed during the last 5 years.

Teams like us, PSG, City, Napoli (BVB next time) look neeed to respond with a different formula if they want to back in business.

The wind is changing. If you haven’t 11 players committed, if you have players with no particular indication to show the talent, if you haven’t a squad with a good body structure, the finals are two: or you are Barça and can sustain the difference with many WC players or you accept the fact and change.

Chelsea, Leicester, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, AS Monaco are examples of current modern teams and Arsenal, City, PSG, Napoli, Sevilla are examples of current surpassed teams.

Everyone now refuse to play the ball from the GK to the CBs, to have a typical #10 behind a striker, to have many playmakers and not BTBs on pitch, to play the ball.

True. Only Barca and Bayern pulling possession football off.

Another Merson special

So can we say Pep is as stubborn as Wenger?

It would appear so.

To be fair to Merson on this one, we all thought Sevilla would easily get past Leicester!

Good point here Maxi. Monaco more last night than the first leg and Leciester night putting a lot of emphasis on working without the ball.
Pep has to take a lot of responsibility for that performance last night.
We all have our gripes with Wenger on his failings but Pep was exposed last night with nothing much more clever than a Kevin Keegan approach of if they score 3 we score 4.
When you quote cliches like best form of defence is attack you sound very naive imo.
Monaco approach to the game had to be nullified not encouraged.
Leciester for all their limitations were able to progress by concentrating on a system that limited a superior opponent.

What a load of horseshit. So Leicester is a modern team and Sevilla isn’t? Because they had the easiest draw in recent memory, lucked their way through the round of 16 with a goal Wes Morgan still doesn’t know how he scored it, and because N’zonzi missed a penalty? Sweeping generalizations like this on a massive sample size of two games are just made for entertainment, I swear. It’s the kind of narrative that pundits like Savage and Owen come up with to explain football results to imbeciles.
Forget that Sevilla are third in a much harder league and Leicester are 15th. Being third is so passé.
BVB are also on their way out, because getting third (maybe second) in the league and making it to the quarterfinals with the youngest squad after having lost their two best players in the summer apparently doesn’t cut it anymore.
And PSG, who missed out by one goal against Barcelona are, of course, also “surpassed”. :arteta:

Seriously cant agree that teams throwing 2 and 4 goal leads away are unlucky.

That’s absolutely shambolic from English teams. Really no excuses to be had, not even the tiresome ‘no winter break’ arguement. It seems that every year you hear pundits say “the big teams are rebuilding, thye have new managers
next year will be different blah blah blah”. I thought that after 2014 we would see English teams dominating Europe again, but I guess not.

It’s not even the fact that there are now 3 genuinly ‘super clubs’. It’s just poor methodology and tactical nouse, perhaps combined with a naviety about the relative strength of European leagues vis-a-vis the Premier League.

Found this quite funny

Has to be trolling lol. Because if it isn’t someone should remind him that Monaco dropped down to Ligue 2 and only the mega investment from the billionaire took them back up lol

When is the Draw for the Quarters ?

Wenger got Nantes relegated in his last season with them too.
