Arsenal Comeback Ensures Important Point
2 second half goals were enough for Arsenal to peg back Liverpool and earn a valuable point at The Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal 2-2 Liverpool
Luis Suarez gave the away side an early lead after poor defending from the Gunners and Jordan Henderson doubled their advantage after the break.
However, Arsenal improved as the second half wore on and goals from Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott ensured that Arsenal didn’t leave the game empty handed.
It only took Liverpool five minutes to open up the scoring. Glen Johnson raced down the left wing and crossed. Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen missed the ball and Wojciech Szczesny was forced to make a great close range save from Daniel Sturridge. Unfortunately for Arsenal though the ball ended up with Suarez whose shot deflected off Per Mertesacker and into the net.
Szczesny was fortunate not long after when he attempted to turn Sturridge in his own area and the English forward nearly caught him out. In the end the Polish keeper was forced to scramble the ball away.
Henderson grabbed Liverpool’s second goal on the hour mark after he skipped past a lazy challenge from Mertesacker and held off Andre Santos. His shot hit Szczesny but the ball came back to him and he was left with an easy finish.
Much has been made of Arsenal’s ability to play better in the second half after a lacklustre start and it was much the same here.
They only had to wait four minutes after Henderson’s goal when Jack Wilshere lifted a free kick into the Liverpool area and Giroud met it with a towering header which left Jose Reina with little chance to get his 5th
goal in his last 3 matches.
Arsenal completed the comeback in the 67th
minute when smart play from Santi Cazorla, Giroud and Walcott saw Giroud touch the ball on for the England international Walcott who lashed it in low first time.
It’s a result which sees Arsenal stay 6th
, 1 point behind North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur although they have played a game more. Liverpool meanwhile stay 7th
, 6 points behind the Gunners but they do have a game in hand.
